Elvis Presley
Few voices changed American life as quickly as Elvis Presley's. In the span of two years, a truck driver from Memphis went from cutting a record at a small storefront studio to shaking up living rooms on Sunday night television. Parents worried, teenagers screamed, and radio stations could not play his records often enough. Later came the Army years, a long run of Hollywood musicals, a black-leather comeback, and the white jumpsuits of Las Vegas.
Many of us can still name the first Elvis song we heard, or the movie we saw at the drive-in on a summer night. Some remember exactly where they were in August 1977 when the news came over the radio. His music crossed every line it met, mixing gospel, country and rhythm and blues into something brand new, and it still turns up at weddings, in diners and on oldies stations today.
These four quizzes follow Elvis from beginning to end. The first goes back to Tupelo, Memphis and Sun Records. The second is all about the songs, and who wrote or sang them first. The third covers his movies and television moments, and the last visits Graceland, Las Vegas and the years that made him a legend. There is no timer and no rush, so pour something cold, put on a record, and see how many you remember.
